The University of Oxford is seeking a new Director of Research Services. The University is a world leader in research, knowledge exchange and innovation. The scale of its activity is the largest in Europe, and it is currently the most successful UK University in obtaining funding for research and for technology transfer. The University holds research grants and contracts from a range of external sources. Annual income from such organizations stands at circa £600 million.

Reporting to the Registrar and working closely with the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, the post holder will lead - and contribute to the ongoing development of - a key University professional service, whose mission it is to provide advice and support to the research community on all matters relating to research, intellectual property, knowledge exchange and innovation. The new director will lead a highly devolved team of 100+ across the University, and will provide administrative leadership for the REF 2021 process and subsequent exercises. He/she will build and cultivate effective relationships with research-sponsoring organisations such as government departments, research councils, the EU, health authorities and charitable bodies. This is one of the key roles in the Registrar’s senior team.

The University seeks an outstanding individual ideally educated to higher degree level with experience in high-level research management in a Higher Education (or other research-led) institution.  Ideal candidates will be skilled operators, with a strong track-record of managing large teams and budgets effectively. The successful candidate will be a strong delegator with superb influencing skills and the ability to lead and motivate a highly capable team. Candidates must be outwardly attuned with sound knowledge of the research funding landscape. They must be able to manage a heavy workload in a pressured environment, and communicate effectively with the academic community. Proven relationship-building skills will be critical.

The post holder will be based at the University Offices, Wellington Square in central Oxford and will be paid a competitive salary.
