Research Associate

University of Cambridge - Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.

A Research Associate position is available within the Hybrid Materials Group of Dr. Thomas D. Bennett, in a project funded by EPSRC, to carry out research on metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses - a new category of melt quenched glass exterior to the inorganic, organic and metallic categories currently known. MOFs are nanoporous, three dimensional compounds consisting of inorganic nodes connected by organic ligands. Recently, a selection of the 60,000 structures available have been found to melt, and form bulk glasses upon quenching.

The aims of this project are (i) to introduce optical functionality into the glasses through inclusion of different chemical components, (ii) to draw structure - property relationships correlating organic linker and porous characteristics of the glasses formed and (iii) synthesize novel MOF composite materials. The selected candidate will work closely with the group of Dr. F. X. Coudert in Chimie ParisTech, who provide computational support for the project.

The Research Associate will carry out the synthesis of porous metal-organic frameworks, and characterize them using differential scanning calorimetry, electron microscopy, pair distribution function analysis and gas sorption experiments. They will also be expected to help support a burgeoning research group, and contribute to a thriving academic environment.

Applicants should have a PhD in Materials Science or related subject.
