University of Cambridge - MRC Epidemiology Unit

The MRC Epidemiology Unit, a department within the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of Cambridge, wishes to appoint a Finance and Business Manager. The mission of the Unit is to understand the genetic, developmental and environmental determinants of obesity, diabetes and related metabolic disorders and translate this into preventive action. The department comprises an MRC funded Unit and a wider department supported by research grants and other income. The department has expanded significantly particularly through substantial new awards relating to national and international public health research. The post-holder will play a key role in supporting the continued development of the department.

The Finance and Business Manager leads the department's business services of finance, human resources and facilities management using central University systems and services. The complex funding model and matrix structure of the department requires strategic management of funding to ensure optimal use of resources. The role will take the lead in ensuring continuous improvement in processes across the department and driving through change where appropriate. The successful candidate will be a member of the leadership team and will proactively engage with senior colleagues providing advice, guidance and support, enabling and influencing decision making to achieve strategic objectives.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience of budgetary and financial management along with an understanding of the research funding environment and grant administration. They will have strong interpersonal and negotiating skills, with the ability to build effective relationships as well as influence and challenge senior colleagues. They will also be highly motivated and able to work on their own initiative and make independent decisions.
