Intro:

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, the School was ranked first for research environment in Architecture, Built Environment and Planning, with 95% of research rated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ for its influence on society, the economy and policy.  A key part of the School’s ethos is the extensive links with industry. Many research projects are sponsored and applied by organisations in the civil engineering, construction and transport sectors, and Loughborough graduates are extremely sought after by industry and commerce world-wide.

Applications are invited for a Research Engineer to undertake a joint research project between High Speed Two (HS2) Limited and Loughborough University, via a prestigious four-year Engineering Doctorate programme, leading to the award ‘Doctor of Engineering’.

Project Detail:

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to develop innovations which will help in the design, delivery and operation of High Speed Two – the largest construction project in Europe – and ensure it is one of the world’s most technologically advanced railways. Working under an umbrella theme of “Innovation for whole life value”, HS2 is working with Loughborough University to help optimise the design, build and operation of the HS2 railway.

The project’s aim is to develop novel and effective practices for site based compliance monitoring and/or testing to verify appropriate build quality of placed soils/fill materials and trackbed support. The research aligns with HS2’s design standards for high-speed rail, and aims to facilitate a step-change in construction assurance in respect of quality, risk, safety and programme.

The successful candidate will be required to work between HS2’s Birmingham Head Office and Loughborough University, and with parties from the HS2 supply chain.

Entry requirements:

Applicants must have a minimum of a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) with a background in geotechnical/civil engineering, materials engineering or geophysics. A relevant Master’s degree and/or employment experience in construction materials design and/or testing, earthworks engineering and/or transport infrastructure is desirable, and experience of data collection and analysis from laboratory and/or field work. Excellent communication and IT skills are required.

Funding information:

The studentship is for four years and is intended to start on 1st April 2018. The studentship provides a starting minimum tax-free stipend of £19,413 per annum (2017/18 rates – the stipend will rise in line with the level set by the RCUK) plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. The stipend may be higher for more experienced graduates. Due to funding restrictions this studentship is only open to UK/EU applicants.
