Research Associate – Immortal Manufacturing – EPSRC New Industrial Systems

Lancaster University - Engineering

The ‘Immortal Manufacturing Consortium’ is a large EPSRC funded research project seeking to develop a New Industrial System capable of indefinitely extending the lifetime of manufactured products by imbuing them with innate capability to evolve in-service. We will facilitate a step-change in the development of these systems by formulation of truly integrated biological/non-biological products. The project is led by Bristol University with 6 other partner institutions making a £2.7m project over 3 years. Lancaster’s contribution will be working closely with industrial partners and the academic team to design and demonstrate the product applications which have been identified as first targets, such as electrical connections in subsea connectors and energy devices.

You will join a small research team, led by Dr. Richard Dawson. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a hard-working, proactive and practical individual. We are looking for a highly skilled postdoctoral research scientist with a practical background in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or any discipline and experience aligned to energy devices (such as batteries/fuel cells).

Lancaster is a top-10 university in the UK and in the top-125 in the World. Engineering at Lancaster is consistently in the top-5 with particularly high rankings for student satisfaction. The department has grown significantly in recent years to twice its size. In 2015 we moved to a brand new purpose-built building. Research foci within the Department include nuclear, clean combustion, electrochemical energy devices, transport, energy policy and renewables.

This is a fixed term appointment for 36 months.

Informal enquiries to Dr. Richard Dawson, email: or Telephone 01524 593685.

We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.
