PhD Studentship in Optimal System Operation under Dynamic Stability Constraints

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in Optimal System Operation under Dynamic Stability Constraints. The work will be based within the Control and Power group in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Imperial College London.  The student will be supervised by Dr Fei Teng. The studentship will start as soon as possible from January 2018.

The variability, uncertainty and low-inertia capability of renewables lead to the need of fundamental review on the system control, operation and planning for the future low-carbon systems. To address the challenges of deteriorating dynamic angle and voltage stability driven by the declining system inertia, this PhD studentship will develop a novel multi-temporal and multi-spatial system operational framework by integrating the static and dynamic system models under both preventive and corrective control options. Advanced modelling and optimization techniques and/or data analytics will be investigated in this thesis. This framework will be applied to identify the limitations and potential solutions to achieve cost-effective transition towards the low carbon systems.

To apply for this position, applicants should have a Distinction/First class Master’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field, and good communication and technical writing skills. Strong knowledge in power system stability, optimization and mathematical programming are desirable.

The studentship provides a (tax-free) bursary of £16,553 (Standard RCUK Bursary rate) per annum for up to 3.5 years to cover living expenses, together with the College tuition fees at the UK/EU rate for 3 years. Applications from Overseas will also be considered, but they will have to arrange other funding sources.
