This new full-time post is available to start between April 1 and July 1, 2018, for a duration of 36 months on a fixed term basis. A later start date is possible, but for a shorter duration.

Postdoctoral Research Associate salary from £26,495 up to £33,518 on Grade E. Postdoctoral Research Fellow salary from £34,520 up to £42,418 on Grade F. Both depending on qualifications and experience.

The role

The Astrophysics group at the University of Exeter invites applications for a postdoctoral research position (Research Associate or Fellow) to work on theoretical studies of sun-like and low-mass stars, within the research group led by Prof. Sean Matt. The position is funded by an ERC grant (AWESoMeStars). The successful applicant will collaborate with the PI and the rest of the group, to advance the goals of the AWESoMeStars project.

About you

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion) or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be able to work collaboratively, make presentations at conferences and other events, and supervise the work of others as required. Depending on the level of appointment, the successful applicant will also:

  • (Research Associate) Be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes; be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing, and electronically, and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.
  • (Research Fellow) Be a nationally recognised authority in stellar astrophysics and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies; be able to develop research objectives, projects, and proposals, identify sources of research funding, contribute to the process of securing funds, and act as team leader as required.

The successful candidate will be appointed at Postdoctoral Research Associate (Grade E) or Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Grade F) depending on the skills and experience the individual can bring to the role. Candidates should demonstrate their achievement against the relevant criteria in the accompanying person specifications, which will be used to make an appointment at an appropriate level.
