Research Fellow in Smart Composites Development

Cranfield University - School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing

Manufacturing Theme/Composites Centre

Fixed Term contract for 14 months

Location: Cranfield, Bedfordshire, UK

The School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing (SATM) is a leading provider of postgraduate level engineering education, research and technology support to individuals and organisations. With its advanced design and manufacturing capability, the pioneering Enhanced Composites & Structures Centre is an established partner to manufacturers and the members of their supply chains through short courses, consultancy and research. The Centre investigates and develops materials and processing technology for lightweight and efficient structures and combines an expertise in low cost manufacturing with modelling, simulation and structural health monitoring technologies. The Centre is a core partner in the strategic EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Composites (CIMComp), supported by major manufacturers.

A position for a Research Fellow with an excellent track record and relevant PhD degree (or close to completion) in polymer composites, nanotechnology area or material science/nano-material is available at the Enhanced Composites & Structures Centre at Cranfield University. You will join a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, academics, senior technicians and postgraduate students, and will work on an EPSRC funded pioneering scientific research on a new generation of smart composites for high performance applications.

The research aims to develop a novel integrated Self-Tuning Fibre-Reinforced Polymer Adaptive Nanocomposite (STRAINcomp), a state-of-the-art material microstructurally equipped with self-regulate reversible properties, in response to varying operating conditions. The research will contain experiments mapping from microstructural characterisation to macro-scale performance. You will mainly be involved in polymer processing, polymer matrix composite processing and nano-material synthesis. You will also be responsible for carrying out mechanical tests and material characterisation. The research will also involve in-situ measurements at the STFC Diamond Light Source in Oxfordshire.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in polymer composites, nanotechnology, material science, nano-materials and will be expected to work collaboratively with the external and internal collaborators including the Through-life Engineering Services Centre at Cranfield University, and the NCCEF at Manchester University. You will also be expected to publish the work in top rank relevant journals and proceedings, and should be able to travel within the UK and EU.
