Principal Lecturer in Performing Arts (1.0 FTE)

The Principal Lecturer in Performing Arts is a Head of Subject role reporting to the Director of the Institute of the Arts and provides leadership and management of our Performing Arts Subject Area presently comprising taught provision across Acting, Dance and Musical Theatre.

A key member of the Institute’s Management and Leadership Team, the post holder will ensure high-quality teaching and learning and an exceptional student experience leading to excellent student outcomes in academic and professional terms.

You will join the Institute of the Arts at an important moment of undergraduate and postgraduate portfolio review and so knowledge of Performing Arts provision across the HE sector and expertise in curriculum design and quality assurance processes will be invaluable. A track record of strategic engagement with research, enterprise and innovation would also be advantageous as the University seeks to secure Research Degree Awarding Powers.

We are seeking qualified, motivated and dynamic practitioner-teacher-scholar to foster a culture of exploration, discovery and intellectual challenge that fulfils our strategic aim of being of and for Cumbria but with national and international reach and impact.

The Institute of the Arts is based on the University’s dedicated creative campus at Brampton Road, Carlisle, where there has been a School of Arts for almost 70 years. We also contribute to a history of specialist arts and humanities education in Carlisle dating back to 1822.

We are a creative community of practitioner-teacher-scholars committed to supporting students to develop sustainable and impactful practices and careers in the arts and creative industries. With over 700 students across our subject areas of Art & Design, Media Arts and English, and Performing Arts, we have a distinctive and growing portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research degrees responding to the outstanding arts, culture and heritage landscape of Carlisle and Cumbria.

The Institute plays a central role in delivering the University’s arts and culture strategy across the region to help grow sustainable and dynamic partnerships for the sector. Major partnerships currently include Theatre-by-the-Lake, Keswick and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Carlisle.

Expected Starting Salary: £49,149 with incremental progression up to £56,950
