About The Role

A vacancy exists for a Mechanical Support Technician in the ISIS Mechanical Engineering Section, which is part of the ISIS Accelerator Division at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Didcot. 

You will be expected to undertake the following duties:

  • Produce high quality machining work (including turning and milling) to close tolerances working to sketches, engineering drawings and verbal instructions as appropriate and to produce appropriate jigs and fittings as necessary
  • Have responsibility for a given area of work associated with the build, assembly, modification and installation of new projects connected with the ISIS accelerator
  • Have responsibility for initiating the repair and maintenance of a wide range of installed components for a given area of the injector, synchrotron and EPB.

You would be expected to be willing to enter radiologically designated areas and be willing to participate in/assist in out-of-hours breakdowns. In the interests of keeping ISIS fully operational, willingness to resolve faults and problems during silent hours would be a distinct advantage.

About You

It is essential that you have a mechanical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent. You must also have relevant experience as a machinist and in mechanical fitting.

An ONC in mechanical engineering or equivalent (or equivalent experience) and experience of CNC tooling and programming is desirable but not essential.

The use of initiative and a flexible and innovative approach to problem solving is required within the role as well as excellent interpersonal and team working skills, together with the ability to communicate effectively on technical issues with staff and facility users at all levels.

You should also be computer literate and be able to demonstrate use of Microsoft office software products.
