MRes/PhD Programme

Our comprehensive 2+4 year programme will provide you with a thorough understanding of research techniques and in-depth appreciation of principal areas of concern for researchers in economics.

Many students offered a place on the MRes are offered financial support consisting of a fee waiver and a maintenance award.

MRes/PhD
Duration: 2 years full time
PhD: further 4 years full time
Start date: 17 September 2018
Funding: A full fee waiver plus maintenance (maintenance amount - to be confirmed)

Two year MRes 
Year one 
Based on advanced courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics, along with a fourth core module ‘The Practice of Economic Research’.

Year two 
You will take option courses guided by own research interests and complete the MRes dissertation.

Progression to four-year PhD
If you pass the MRes at a sufficiently high level of performance; 65% average in year one and in year two, and a mark of 65% for the dissertation, you will then be eligible to proceed to the four-year PhD programme.
Our PhD will allow you to develop as a researcher and to make your own mark not only in academia, but also in the public and private sectors, in all fields where excellent research and analysis is required.

Job market advantage
We offer tailored job market support for our PhD students. This includes a regular series of seminar workshops where you have the opportunity to present your job market paper and to receive feedback from our placement team, members of faculty and other PhD students.
