Technical Manager - Crops and Environment Laboratory (CEL)

Are you ready to manage a team of four supporting crop and horticultural research trials in a large glasshouse and controlled environment facility at one of the country’s top agricultural Universities?

The University of Reading is seeking to appoint a full-time Technical Manager to provide leadership and management of a team of technicians supporting the Crops and Environment Laboratory that sits within the School of Agriculture, Policy and Development.

The post holder will manage the team to deliver high quality and flexible support to research and teaching activities based around the Crops and Environment Laboratory platform which include:

  • A large suite of specialised glasshouses permitting varying degrees of control of light and shade, temperature (heating and cooling), carbon dioxide and bespoke irrigation and fertigation regimes.
  • Matched sets of controlled environment cabinets remotely controlled and monitored permitting factorial experimentation involving various environmental and nutritional factors.
  • A suite of walk-in growth rooms.
  • Five hectares of grounds where protected crops are grown outdoors on a small scale.
  • Various ancillary laboratory spaces, equipment rooms and a controlled environment workshop.

You will have:

  • Strong people management competence, including the ability to allocate and manage workloads.
  • Extensive specialist experience acquired in relevant roles.
  • Proven experience of managing outcomes associated with research and/or teaching in similar environments.
  • Skill level equivalent to achievement of a professional qualification or a degree in a relevant subject e.g. Botany/Horticulture/Agricultural Science.
  • Significant practical knowledge of the appropriate use of controlled environments and specialist glasshouses in plant/crop science research.
  • Commitment to staff and student development and support.
