Biotransformation Expert

University of Dundee - Drug Discovery Unit

We are seeking a personable and enthusiastic individual to take up the post of Biotransformation Expert within the Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) team in the Drug Discovery Unit (DDU), University of Dundee. The DDU has a strong focus to find new drugs to treat diseases of the developing world such as malaria, tuberculosis, visceral leishmaniasis and Chagas disease (see www.drugdiscovery.dundee.ac.uk).

The successful applicant will work within the DMPK team in the DDU to provide bioanalytical expertise, with particular emphasis on metabolite identification support, contributing to drug discovery projects from the hit discovery phase through to lead optimisation and candidate selection. The bioanalytical laboratory is well equipped to meet the demands required to support all DMPK assays applied within an early drug discovery setting, with a UPLC Quattro Premier XE, a UPLC Xevo TQs, a UPLC micro TQs and a UPLC Xevo Qtof.
You will have a minimum of an analytical chemistry related degree, together with DMPK drug discovery experience gained working in a drug discovery research and/or development environment, preferably within the BioPharmaceutical industry.

The post is available immediately.

The starting salary for this post will be within Grade 8 salary scale depending on the experience of the candidate. A relocation allowance is available.

The DMPK Biotransformation expert scientist will:

  • Provide metabolite identification support to all drug discovery programmes
    • Provide Bioanalytical method development and sample analysis in support of in vitro DMPK assays and in vivo pharmacokinetics
    • Act as bioanalytical expert in ongoing and new collaborations involving MS imaging technology
    • Perform routine MS maintenance and help in day-to-day running of the MS lab
    • Work with project teams to maximise impact of DMPK within DDU lead optimisation programmes
    • Carry out data analysis and relevant quality assurance

Required attributes:

  • Professionally qualified with a minimum of a degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry or a related topic
    • Extensive experience of carrying out bioanalysis and bioanalytical method development within a drug discovery or development project
    • Extensive Experience in metabolite identification as applicable to small molecule drug discovery project support
    • A demonstrable expertise in DMPK
    • A strong understanding and appreciation of the drug discovery process
    • Highly motivated with a strong proactive approach
    • Excellent team working skills
    • A willingness to work flexibly
    • Excellent time management and organisational skills
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Knowledge/experience of MS imaging techniques such as MALDI would be an advantage
