Research Associate / Senior Research Associate for Laparoscopic Liver Surgery

We have recently been awarded a new 3-year project, funded by the NIHR i4i scheme, to enhance our image-guided liver surgery system, and to drive towards a commercialisable product. We have previously demonstrated an image guidance system that can align pre-operative CT images with intra-operative video. Our aim is to provide further capabilities such as pre-operative planning tools, re-planning during surgery, more usable calibration procedures, integration of laparoscopic ultrasound and more advanced non-linear image registration. This project will form a key part of our on-going translational research strategy connecting UCL Engineering with our flagship programme at the Royal Free Hospital.

We are seeking a post-doctoral research associate to work on developing advanced computational techniques for surgical planning and guidance. These may include non-linear image registration, biomechanical modelling, advanced visualisation, system calibration, and validation of overall system accuracy. This is a translational project, and the successful candidate will be involved in integrating novel algorithms into our research software platform, and responsible for taking the system into surgical procedures in the operating room. The project is ambitious and will be an exciting opportunity to link advanced medical image computing with an unmet clinical need, and ultimately benefit patients undergoing liver surgery. The post is funded for 2 years in the first instance.

The successful candidate must have a PhD in computer vision, medical image computing, image-guided surgery, biomedical engineering or a comparable subject and level of experience. They must have a strong programming experience in C++ and a scripting language such python or MATLAB.

The candidate must specialise in several of:

  • Non-linear image registration 
  • Biomechanical modeling
  • Machine learning
  • Applications of image guided surgery
  • Surgical planning
  • GPU/HPC programming, preferably using CUDA 
  • Advanced C++ programming, including multi-threading, and parallelization.

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be G7: £34,635 - £41,864 G8: £43,023 - £50,753 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
