Full time starting salary is normally in the range £29,799 to £38,832. With potential progression once in post to £41,212 a year.

The Horizon2020 project ACEnano is a multi-disciplinary European consortium involving world-leading groups in nanomaterials characterisation and innovative method development. It aims to establish a programme of advanced research in support of EU policies around nanomaterials safety and regulation.

The purpose of the role within ACEnano is to lead on the development of on-chip assays for automated/miniaturised surface reactivity testing. Assays for the most relevant types of reactivity (e.g. ROS generation, photocatalytic activity) and binding assays, for example to assess hydrophobicity and strain will be developed. Therefore, routine assays (e.g. 96-well plate format) to assess NM dissolution, coating stability/degradation under exposure conditions will be innovated and streamlined.

Additional tasks will involve, support for other ACEnano project partners requiring characterisation of NMs in cell culture media etc. as needed. Another aspect of the role will be to investigate the interactions of ACEnano nanomaterials with artificial membranes and cells via Quartz Crystal Microbalance approaches, to compare and benchmark the various approaches, in terms of the ability to determine and quantify internalised cellular doses of nanomaterials. 

An additional role would be to optimise TG-IR-GC/MS for the identification and precise quantification of the organic coating on NMs and nanostructured surfaces. This hyphenated platform relies on the use of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to precisely quantify the amount of mass evolved that is first identified by a spectroscopic technique, tracking isolated molecular components in real time, followed by precise molecular quantification using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Combining these techniques is a powerful approach for assessment of complex mixtures of capping agents on the surface of NMs. An important aspect of the role will be in liaising with industry and academic partners in protocol development and data management.

Please note this post is aligned to external funding and therefore the salary on offer is up to a maximum of £29,799 only.
