Research Associate (Metal Additive Manufacturing Thermal Metrology)

University of Sheffield - Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Contract Type: Fixed term with a start date as soon as possible and end date 31 March 2019

Are you interested in pushing the boundaries of metal additive manufacturing? We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering to develop the next generation of imaging and sensors for AM processes and applications.

You will be working on the development of metal AM processes for: MIRIAM (Machine Intelligence for Radically Improved Additive Manufacturing) funded by the UK’s Industry Strategy Challenge Funding.

You will be developing new sensing and control systems to achieve closed loop control and ‘right first time’ manufacturing on industrial metal additive manufacturing systems, and developing new applications for AM in the space sector. You will be expected to collaborate with researchers from other disciplines (for example control and systems engineering, metrology) and academic institutions and industrial partners.  Educated to PhD level (or close to completion), you will have experience in developing Matlab and/or LabView applications for image processing, coupled with strong project management and team working skills.

You will be part of a large, growing and well-connected team within the EPSRC MAPP Hub. We are well known internationally for our research, and are one of the largest research groups in additive manufacturing in the UK. MAPP is a new £10m Future Manufacturing Hub in Manufacture using Advanced Powder Process funded by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC). For further information about MAPP please visit www.mapp.ac.uk

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
