Job Summary and Purpose

Durham University’s Retail and Hospitality team seeks to appoint an experienced Cafe Team Leader to support the Café Manager in the day to day Cafe operations, ensuring the highest possible standard of service delivery and customer satisfaction.

With excellent team leading skills and a passion for delivering excellence in food and beverage service, the post-holder will have previous experience, preferably within a branded high street chain or hotel. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate good business awareness with a proven track record in exceeding customer expectations.

Team Leading

  • Team lead staff on a daily basis, ensuring the highest standard of food service is delivered.
  • Communicate operational and performance issues to line management.
  • Assist other staff including casual and temporary staff.
  • Adjust the rota in accordance with business needs in the absence of the CM.

Quality of Service

  • Be friendly, helpful and attentive towards all customers; students, colleagues and guests.
  • Anticipate individual needs and proactively provide assistance where required. 
  • Ensure that all meals are delivered in line with service standard SOP’s.
  • Ensure food temperature checks are carried out at the point of service.
  • Ensure that food service areas and rooms are clean and fit for purpose.
  • Ensure that crockery, cutlery, glassware is clean, polished and fit for purpose.

Health and Safety

  • Maintain a safe and secure working environment in line with University Health & Safety procedures.
  • Report any maintenance defects, accidents and near misses to your line manager.
  • Maintain personal hygiene and appearance to an exceptional standard and in line with standard operating procedures.
  • Attend appropriate training courses.


  • Prepare and submit weekly timesheets, in the absence of the CM.
  • Ensure that par stocks are maintained in food service areas, ordering goods where appropriate (in the absence of the CM)
  • As part of the consultation process, the Colleges division are reviewing current flexible working options, following which a revised flexible working contract will be issued with this post.
