Job Purpose

The PhD Fellowship is part of the European Commission funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN): Doctoral Training Network in Terahertz Technologies for Imaging, Radar and Communications Applications, TeraApps, Project 765426. The Fellow will be under the supervision of Professor Richard Hogg, based at the School of Engineering at Glasgow University.

This an excellent opportunity to contribute to high-impact research into the design and epitaxial growth of semiconductor materials for terahertz (THz) sources and detectors, and be involved in a multi-disciplinary project with the chance to learn invaluable research and transferrable skills. Specifically, this project will be focussed on the epitaxial wafer design, manufacture and characterisation of resonant tunnelling diodes devices for THz applications.

The epitaxial growth will be conducted at the University of Glasgows new metal-organic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE) facility which is located at a commercial partner’s site in Blantyre (CST Global Ltd).

The successful candidate will also be expected to attend network-wide events and undertake secondments to partner institutions (both academic and private sector) to further their research.

They will be expected to submit a PhD thesis from this research and publish the results in journals of good impact, as well as attend and contribute to the workshops and secondments specified in the programme.

Standard Terms & Conditions

Salary: Approx. £30,000 per annum

Eligible Researchers will receive an additional mobility allowance depending on personal circumstances.

This post is funded for 3 years.

New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.

According to the regulations for mobility within the Marie Curie programme, the researcher must not have carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of his/her host organisation (in this case, the United Kingdom)for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to recruitment.

New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.

Approximate gross salary stated above is subject to employers NI deductions and the amount varies according to the living costs of host country.

All research and related activities, including grants, donations, clinical trials, contract research, consultancy and commercialisation are required to be managed through the University’s relevant processes (e.g. contractual and financial), in accordance with the University Court’s policies.
