Research Assistant/Associate

A position has arisen for a Research Associate in the laboratory of Dr Richard Hayward within the Department's Division of Microbiology & Parasitology based in central Cambridge.

The successful candidate will join the laboratory working on a project to examine the intracellular biology of the obligate intracellular bacterium *Chlamydia trachomatis* and its interactions with eukaryotic host cells, with particular emphasis on the structure and function of the bacterial type III secretion system.

Candidates should have or shortly expect to have a PhD and a track record of success in biochemistry, cell biology and/or bioimaging techniques. Experience in working at Biosafety Level 2 would be advantageous as would a background in microbial pathogenesis or prior experience working with *Chlamydia* or related intracellular organisms.

Where the successful applicant does not yet have a PhD, he/she will normally be under-appointed as a Research Assistant in a Research Associate post (on the understanding that he/she will be appointed as a Research Associate upon successful completion of his/her PhD). The higher Research Associate salary should be backdated to the thesis submission date of the start date, whichever is the later.

The ability to work both independently and as part of a team, coupled with excellent communication, organizational and problem solving skills are required. Other duties/responsibilities as outlined in the Further Information documents include developing and driving research objectives, writing up work for presentation and publication, assisting in the supervision of student research projects.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.
