Postdoctoral Scientist – Structural Studies

MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology

An opportunity is available for a postdoctoral researcher to work on the structural biology of the spliceosome (Fica and Nagai, 2017). The position is funded by an ERC grant (SPLICE3D) and is located at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK within the group of Dr Kiyoshi Nagai.

We are aiming to understand the molecular mechanism of pre-mRNA splicing through cryo-EM analysis of yeast and mammalian spliceosome (Galej et al., 2016; Fica et al., 2017; Wilkinson et al. 2017).

You should have a PhD in a relevant field of molecular and structural biology and have previous experience in cloning and protein purification. Good understanding of protein and RNA structures through previous crystallographic or cryo-EM studies is essential.  Extensive skills in purification of large complexes from yeast and/or tissue culture cells are desirable.

The successful applicant will be awarded a three year Career Development Fellowship. The fellowship is a training and development position for a post-doctoral scientist who has recently completed their doctoral studies, is moving into a new research discipline or has limited experience of key transferable skills.

The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology is one of the birthplaces of molecular biology and excels at deciphering the molecular mechanisms of life.  It provides an unsurpassed environment for both new and established researchers.  Scientists are drawn to the LMB from all over the world, creating a lively and international community for the exchange of ideas and technical innovation.

Working for the MRC provides a whole host of benefits including a final salary pension scheme, Benenden Healthcare membership and excellent holiday entitlement.  You will also have access to employee shopping/travel discounts, on site sport and social facilities, as well as salary sacrifice cycle to work schemes and childcare vouchers.
