Research Fellow (81271-127)

University of Warwick - Department of Mathematics

Fixed Term Contract (2 posts available): One-year posts to start 1 July 2018, or earlier by negotiation. Please note, the end date will be no later than 30 June 2019.

Applications are invited for two postdoctoral research fellowships funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant project “3D Euler, Vortex Dynamics and PDE” to work with Professor Jose Rodrigo.

You will have a PhD or equivalent in Mathematics, with a strong background in Partial Differential Equations and Fluid Mechanics.

The project focuses on the rigorous study of a collection of problems arising from vortex dynamics for 3D Euler. The scope of the project is quite wide, and aspects covered (as a sample) include:

  • The study of isolated vortex lines (asymptotics, LIA approximation, rigorous derivation, Hasimoto transformation)
  • The evolution and geometry of thin vortex tubes (with a potential numerical component)
  • The study of almost-sharp fronts for the surface quasi-geostrophic equation (analogue of thin vortex tubes for 3D Euler)
  • Connections with the Prandtl equation (from the a priori unrelated area boundary layer theory), in particular with the nonlinear structure of Prandtl that is responsible for the ill-posedness of the equation.

The specific projects can be tailored to your interests and background.

Following submission of the online application form you will need to submit your curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and a research statement. All applicants should also ensure that their 3 referees send their references by email to Ann Hume, (Departmental Secretary, Department of Mathematics, University of Warwick) by email to MathematicsPA@warwick.ac.uk by the closing date.
