Director of the Electric Power Engineering Centre (EPECentre)

An exciting opportunity exists for a dynamic, innovative Director to lead and further develop New Zealand’s centre of research excellence for electric power.

Established in 2002, the EPECentre is a joint initiative between the New Zealand electricity industry and the University of Canterbury (UC). The EPECentre is a research centre in the College of Engineering, and is a unique and exciting organization with an excellent international and national reputation in both engineering education and research. As such, it is well-positioned for significant further growth. It has strong links with New Zealand’s power industry, as well as international linkages, and enjoys nationwide support from both the New Zealand government and industry.

The EPECentre employs high calibre researchers, engineers, and support staff in management, technical, and educational roles to achieve its objectives. There are key educational links with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Engineering College.

In conjunction with, and responsive to, industry, the EPECentre’s research activities solve real problems in a broad range of fields, which include:

  • Electric Power Generation, Transmission, Distribution, and Application
  • Industrial application of Power Electronics
  • Industrial application of instrumentation systems and sensor networks
  • Distributed Generation and Decentralised Energy Systems
  • Electric Vehicles and Battery technologies
  • Smart Grid and “Behind the meter” applications

The Director role has responsibility for the EPECentre’s leadership and strategic direction. Reporting directly to the College of Engineering’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor and the EPECentre Board, a key function will be securing sustainable funding opportunities and further developing the national and international research and educational reputation of the EPECentre. The Director will provide strategic direction, leadership/management in research, and will build and maintain strong relationships with funding providers, academic partners, and governance boards. The Director will also lead initiatives to increase the number of power engineers studying in and graduating from the university to grow the skill base in our industry partners.

To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Significant professional standing relevant to research in or with the electricity industry.
  • Experience with industry-academia collaborative research activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate significant external research income.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Strong skills in building and maintaining relationships.
  • Knowledge of new challenges in New Zealand’s power generation-distribution system, or similar systems around the world.
  • Proven successful experience in a research management and/or leadership role.
  • A track record of activities in student outreach.
  • An understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles: the principles of partnership, participation, and protection that underpin the relationship between the indigenous Māori and the Government of New Zealand.

This role will carry Professorial status for suitable qualified academic/University applicants.
