University of Cambridge - Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance.

A Research Associate position is available within the Materials Chemistry Group in the Department of Materials Science at the University of Cambridge in a project funded by INNOVATE UK, in order to carry out a focused research and development work to help commercialise a technology developed in the research group for recovering spent redox active pastes from lead acid batteries to make very active nano-structured precursors for making new batteries with improved performance. The selected candidate will work very closely with the industrial partner Aurelius Environmental Group (AEL), Tipton, UK and offer strategic research output to help AEL's pilot plant operations.

The main objectives of the project are to develop strategies for understanding the role of reagents in the properties of final battery precursors, fabricate laboratory scale cells using the new precursors and test the cells for performance with a view to reduce costs of the reagents, while improving the quality of the battery active materials. The selected candidate will have knowledge of battery electro-chemistry; techniques such as electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, surface and interfacial analysis, chemical and thermal analysis for characterizing battery components; fabricating laboratory scale cells; and testing of batteries for performance.  Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant subject.

The successful candidate will be primarily located in Department of Materials Science. Cambridge, UK, but may be required to spend a proportion of their time with the industrial collaborator AEL, who hold the global licence for the technology and sited are in Tipton.
