Brunel Design is seeking to appoint a passionate design academic with expertise and vision in industrial design practice, to contribute to teaching and research within the department.

This position will require candidates to possess broad Industrial Design expertise across a range of professional practice areas such as product design and development, digital sketching, CAD, creativity and aesthetic awareness, digital design and digital technologies, design for manufacture, strategic design and innovation management, product service systems, and human-centred design.

Brunel Design has an outstanding reputation for design education and research both nationally and internationally. It offers six design programmes at Undergraduate and Masters levels, which are built on a broad interdisciplinary and industry relevant platform of creative design skills, technical knowledge and practical experience fostered through extensive industry collaborations. The quality of these programmes is reflected in excellent educational ratings and high graduate employability. Brunel Design has recently moved into new facilities and offers staff and students a modern and vibrant teaching environment, combined with extensive digital design and prototyping facilities.

Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in Industrial Design or Product Design, and PhD qualifications directly relevant to the teaching programmes and research activities of Brunel Design, be experienced both in contemporary professional design practice and design education, and have an established research profile in a relevant area.

The appointee will contribute significantly to the teaching of programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a view to assuming a programme directorship or other senior departmental role. The role will require relevant industry expertise, skills, knowledge and understanding, combined with significant teaching experience, and applicants must be able to articulate a clear vision for achieving excellence in teaching and curriculum development.

Research in Brunel Design is organised in three thematic priorities:

  • Human Centred Design (Inclusive Design, Perception Enhancement and the Human Centred Design Institute (HCDI).
  • Design for Sustainability (including Sustainability and Social Responsibility, Cleaner Electronics and Advanced Materials and Manufacture).
  • Design for Innovation (including Design Management, Open Design, Digital Design and Digital Production, and Research Knowledge Transfer).

It is expected that the successful appointee will have the potential to contribute high quality research that enhances activities in at least one of the above departmental research areas, through journal publication, research income generation and engagement with stakeholders.

An essential consideration for the appointment is good teaching and curriculum development skills, and the ability to nurture design students and provide them with a high quality learning experience.

In addition, you will have empathy for interdisciplinary working, and will be expected to work creatively across the subject area, taking an integrated approach to design teaching. Candidates must be self-motivated, with good interpersonal and relationship-building skills and a passion for design education.

The successful candidate will be expected to make a significant contribution to the teaching and research environment of Brunel Design, and assume a leading role in industry and community engagement activities, such as Made in Brunel.

Informal enquiries should be made to the Head of Design, Dr Ian de Vere by email to Ian.deVere@Brunel.ac.uk.
