Purpose and Main Duties

The Department of Film, Media and Cultural Studies at Birkbeck is seeking to appoint a Lecturer with teaching and research expertise in international cultural policy and arts management. The successful candidate must be able to provide undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of a range of potential subject areas under this rubric.

The Department is part of the School of Arts, located in Bloomsbury with a professional-standard cinema and gallery space. We encourage academic collaboration across the College and also nationally and internationally.

The Department houses a number of well-established programmes, including a Foundation Degree in Arts and Media Management, BA programmes in various combinations of Film, Media, Culture, and Journalism, and MA programmes in Arts Policy and Management; Digital Culture, Film and Screen Media, Journalism and Investigative Reporting. A large and highly motivated cohort of PhD research students are engaged on theoretical, cultural and practice-based projects. Our academic staff are all research active, enjoying international reputations and impressive publishing profiles.

The successful candidate will therefore have a PhD in a relevant area, and be expected to be engaged in advanced research and able to provide research-led teaching at all levels.

Research or teaching competence in one or more of the following areas would be welcomed:

  • Cultural flows and digital engagement.
  • Cultural policy and creative industries policy, especially in Asian contexts.
  • Organisational structures and management in the arts.
  • Creative justice.

Indicative teaching might include modules such as: ‘Research Methods’, ‘Comparative Cultural Policy’, ‘Issues in Arts and Media: Histories and Context’ and ‘Contemporary Challenges.’

Candidate Requirements

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an internationally excellent research record, commensurate with their career stage; the ability to deliver excellent teaching at undergraduate and graduate level; and willingness and ability to undertake relevant administrative tasks. One of the initiatives the successful applicant will be expected to undertake will be the conversion of the existing Foundation Degree in Arts and Media Management into a full BA programme for launch in 2019/20.

Further Information

Salary: Grade 8 of the College's London Pay Scale which is £43,642 rising to £51,372 per annum.

This post is full time, 35 hours per week (1.0 FTE) and open-ended. The salary quoted above is on the College's London Pay Scale and includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the Greater London area. The initial salary will be dependent on the skills and experience of the successful applicant. The appointment is subject to a probationary period of 3 years. Birkbeck also provides a generous defined benefit pension scheme, 31 days paid leave, flexible working arrangements and other great benefits.
