King's College London - Department of Basic and Clinical Neuroscience

The salary will be paid at Grade 6, £33,518 - £37,706 per annum, plus £2,923 per annum London Allowance.

This post will be Fixed Term Contract ending 30 November 2020

This is a Full-time post –100% full time equivalent

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Basic and Clinical Neuroscience at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience. The post is funded by Alzheimer’s Research UK. Signaling between the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria regulates many fundamental cellular functions. This signaling is facilitated by tethering proteins that facilitate recruitment of regions of ER to mitochondria; we have identified such tethers. Recent studies including work from our group have demonstrated that ER-mitochondria signaling is damaged in Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and related dementias. This project is to study further ER-mitochondria signaling and tethers in dementia. It also aims to determine the potential benefits of using pharmacologically active compounds to correct damaged ER-mitochondria signaling in models of frontotemporal dementia/motor neuron disease. These studies may reveal new strategies for treating dementia.

Experience in working with transgenic mouse models, advanced microscopy, biochemical, cell and molecular biology approaches including neurons would be advantageous. Knowledge of defective signaling processes in dementia and related disorders will also be useful. The successful applicant will join an established research group headed by Professor Chris Miller see

The selection process will include a presentation and a panel interview.

Interviews are scheduled to be held in January/February 2018.

For an informal discussion to find out more about the role please contact Professor Chris Miller at
