Senior Research Fellow in Digital Journalism Innovation

The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford is seeking to appoint a Senior Research Fellow to lead a new project that aims to identify and analyse examples of innovative best practices in digital, mobile, and social media journalism to help independent, professional news organisations develop more effective editorial, distribution, and funding strategies aligned with an evolving media environment. The position is entirely oriented towards research and engagement with the news industry and professional journalists, and does not come with any teaching responsibilities.

We are looking for a researcher with an established record of independent, relevant work and the skills to take responsibility for the project and produce high-quality relevant research to our academic, industry, and professional target audiences.

The purpose of the project is to examine digital, mobile, and social/platform-based journalism, including examples from both legacy and digital-born organisations and identify best-practice examples of editorial innovation and the factors that enable and underpin them. In line with the Reuters Institute’s mission, the research output should include both academic publications and publications oriented primarily at media industry professionals, practicing journalists, and policy-makers.

We expect the person appointed to develop and define specific studies within the project parameters and to lead both the research, writing, and publication of this work, while simultaneously working with colleagues across the institute and beyond on strengthening our ability to understand current changes in journalism and news media. The person appointed will work closely with the Reuters Institute Director of Research; a team of other Oxford-based researchers, as well as a wider network of outside partners from both the academy and the media industry. The role will involve research as well as strategic planning, development, and engagement with our team of postdoctoral researchers.

The ideal candidate is someone who has a recognised reputation and proven track record of independent internationally-oriented, high-quality research of relevance for both academics and practitioners who is keen to seize this opportunity to lead a high-profile new research project at an institution that combines academic excellence with a commitment to relevance and engagement with industry and practice.

The position is an exceptional chance to develop skills and experience as a research leader, to make a major contribution to our understanding of a rapidly changing media environment, and to help develop and define the research profile of one the most important centres of international research on journalism and news media. The position is initially until the end of December 2018 with potential for extension. The role is funded by a research grant from Facebook.
