The post

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in research of redox flow battery for energy storage. This EPSRC funded post is available from 01 March 2018 to 31 July 2019. The successful applicant will investigate an innovative redox flow battery system based on nickel and zinc redox couples. The research work will be carried out with project partners, Imperial College London and University of Warwick, through an integrated programme of nanostructured electrode design, high-resolution in-operando studies, and physics-based modelling.

The research work of this post will be focused on ways (i) to investigate and identify suitable additives to improve the morphology of thick zinc electrodeposits when subjected to multiple deposition/dissolution cycles; (ii) to apply advanced nanotechnology to fabricate high surface area of nanostructured nickel electrodes to increase the power density; (iii) to introduce electrolyte flow and to design the flow field to enable a uniformly thick zinc deposition; (iv) to design, construct and test a trial battery based on experimental data and additional design aspects, e.g. the fluid flow field, heat transfer and mechanical components.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.

Applicants will possess a PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in Electrochemistry, Material Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Energy Engineering. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.
