Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Automotive or Mechanical Engineering

University of Surrey - Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences

The Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences at the University of Surrey is seeking to recruit a member of academic staff to support its research and teaching in Automotive and Mechanical Engineering.  The Department benefits from extensive national and international collaboration, excellent facilities, and strong links with industry.

Research activity in the Department currently includes work on fully electric and hybrid vehicles, vehicle dynamics control, and terrestrial mobile and space robotics. Facilities include state-of-the-art test rigs for powertrains, mechanical transmissions and braking systems. Furthermore, the Department is involved in the National Hub on Future AI and Robotics for Space (FAIR-SPACE) in collaboration with the Surrey Space Centre’s STAR Lab. The Hub receives initial £6.9M funding from ESPRC/UKSA and £22.3M in-kind/cash support from 28 organisations. The appointee would be expected to have an appropriate engineering (or related discipline) background, and to undertake high quality research in one of these areas, or to establish new complementary areas. Research may also complement other departmental research areas in Aerospace or Biomedical engineering.

The appointee will be expected to teach students on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Automotive or Mechanical Engineering. These are well established programmes which attract high calibre students.  Experience in teaching control would be particularly welcome. An ability and enthusiasm for delivering a high quality student experience are essential. Chartered Engineer status would also be desirable.

The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze Award and is committed to equality of opportunity and the promotion of diversity for the benefit of all.

Depending on experience, qualifications and research track record, appointments will be made at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level. Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Nick Hills, (T: +441483 682356, E: n.hills@surrey.ac.uk).
