The Hull York Medical School is seeking to appoint a high-calibre educationalist and researcher in medical/health professions education, with a clear vision to lead our newly established Health Professions Education Unit. The Hull York Medical School (HYMS) brings together the strengths of Universities of Hull and York in the life, clinical, health and social sciences. It works closely with other departments in the Universities and many staff are embedded in jointly managed academic centres in host departments. The successful candidate will work within the core HYMS leadership team.

This is a new and exciting challenge and we welcome interest from talented and exceptional academics with a research profile appropriate to the level of application, and a collegiate approach to their work. You will have a track record of high quality research in an area relevant to medical /health professions education and development, and will be expected to grow a research portfolio that has the potential to be recognised internationally and to contribute to the teaching and assessment of HYMS students across its portfolio of programmes.

The main purpose of the role is to generate new research approaches and to take responsibility for overseeing, developing and promoting innovative teaching and learning approaches. You will lead on the production of research outputs and outcomes, publishing in high impact research in quality journals and generating external research funding. You will also lead the design, development and delivery of a range of academic modules and undertake effectively a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities.

Key requirements:

  • PhD in relevant field of study
  • Teaching qualification and/or appropriate level of HEA accreditation
  • Specialist knowledge in medical/health professions education
  • Ability to undertake high-quality research and publish in leading, peer-reviewed journals  
  • Ability to define, lead, manage and attract funds for educational research, operating across disciplinary boundaries
  • Recent and relevant experience of and commitment to teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Demonstrable capacity for creative thinking and planning
  • Substantial recent publication record in leading peer-reviewed journal
  • Evidence of national and/or international collaboration

You will have a track record in obtaining research funding and will be in a strong position to apply to NIHR and other funding streams. You should have a clear plan for future research in your own field of expertise. We will therefore appoint a candidate who has the drive to develop their research in new directions to respond to regional and national priorities. Salary will be within the range: £49,419—£56,950 a year or Clinical Academic Scale may apply: £51,176 - £103,490 a year. The post is available full time on an open contract.
