Postdoctoral Research Associate in Supramolecular Gel

Durham University - Department Of Chemistry

We are seeking an experience Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, crystallization and solid form analysis. The project will involve the design and preparation of small-molecule gel-forming compounds that will be used as part of an advanced pharmaceutical crystallization approach. The project will involve developing a toolkit of different kinds of gels that will act as crystallization media for pharmaceuticals with a view to polymorph control. The project will be supervised by Prof. Jonathan W. Steed and is in collaboration with the group of Prof. Graeme Day (Southampton) and the post holder will liaise with a dedicated PDRA in Southampton who will carry out crystal structure prediction and further computational studies that will be used to inform gel design. The project also is in collaboration with AstraZeneca and Circe Crystal Engineering and industrial stakeholders and may involve travel to the industrial labs.

The primary technical responsibilities include undertaking gelator synthesis, and gel pharmaceutical crystallization studies, solid state characterisation of molecular organic solids and of gels using techniques such as XRPD, single crystal X-ray diffraction, rheology, IR and Raman spectroscopy, thermomicroscopy, electron microscopy. The post holder will analyse and interpret data, prepare written and oral reports on progress and contribute to the preparation of beam time applications for large scale facilities. They will also supervise PhD and MChem students in the laboratory and oversee routine maintenance on local instrumentation and liaise with equipment service professionals. Develop detailed programmes of work and assess progress against the work plan. Keep comprehensive, accessible and secure records of experimental designs, data and analyses. Prepare monthly and quarterly reports; participate in scheduled electronic and face-to-face meetings including presentation of research results. Organise and chair web-conferences if requested. Present research presentations at national and international conferences. Write or assist with the writing of papers for publication in international journals and conference proceedings. Liaise effectively with members of the research team at Durham, Southampton, AstraZeneca Macclesfield and Circe, Mallorca.

This post is fixed term for 3 years duration – funding is from EPSRC and is available from 1/3/18 for this fixed period only.

The post-holder is employed to work on research/a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.

Successful applicants will, ideally, be in post by 1st March 2018.
