About the opportunity

The School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney is one of the main centres for chemical research and education in Australia and has access to a comprehensive range of modern research and teaching facilities. The School attracts outstanding undergraduate students, including large numbers of talented students, from all over Australia. It has a large cohort of postgraduate research students and offers a vibrant and world class research environment.

The School is currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Chemistry.

In this role you will:

  • Conduct synthesis, anion binding studies and anion transport studies on receptor systems designed to allow the flow of chloride, bicarbonate and other species through lipid bilayer membrane.
  • Present research findings at conferences and preparing papers for publication in refereed journals.
  • Be responsible for administrative tasks relating to project organisation, safety matters, and general lab management within the group.
  • Provide supervision for research students and be a good role model as a senior member of the research group, demonstrating professionalism in research ethics and integrity, day-to-day lab housekeeping and safe practices.
  • Contribute to preparation of grant proposals for research funding.

We are looking for a candidate with the following skills and experience:

  • PhD in Chemistry.
  • Synthesis of supramolecular and macrocyclic anion receptors.
  • Guest complexation studies by various techniques.
  • Experience of supramolecular chemistry techniques (e.g. binding/transport assays).
  • Experience in research record keeping and regular disseminatation of research findings at group meetings and conferences.
  • Experience in writing up results for publications as sole author or in collaboration and contributing to grant proposals.
  • Proven ability in developing novel techniques and investigative research methods as evidenced by a track record of publications in leading general interest chemistry journals (i.e. JACS, Angew. Chem., or higher impact publications).
  • The capability to analyse complex problems and, drawing from research experience and initiative, develop methodologies and practical approaches to solve them.
