Research Associate (Band 500) in Translational Respiratory Research

FullTime, Fixed Term for 12 months

Applications are invited for a full time research technician to work in the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing at the University of Birmingham, under the supervision of Professor David Thickett and Dr Rachel Dancer.

The position is available for 12 months on a project investigating immune dysregulation in patients with pneumonia and influenza. The post will support current translational clinical research, including work on animal models of respiratory infection and develop further data to support ongoing applications.

Laboratory work will be based within the respiratory research laboratory which is part an £8M facility located within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The post-holder will work alongside a postdoctoral research fellow, several clinical research fellows and lecturers from both scientific and clinical backgrounds in the laboratory.

The research will include:

  • Support work on animal models of pneumonia - assisting sample collection and processing
  • Blood and tissue sample preparation
  • Detailed immunological phenotyping by multiparameter flow cytometry
  • Cell culture and in vitro assays neutrophil function
  • Cytokine and chemokine measurement by ELISA

2.1 honours degree or above or equivalent in a biological subject is essential. Experience in handling of biological samples essential. Experience of working in a lab using the above techniques is desirable, but training will be provided when required.

Starting salary is normally in the range Full time starting salary is normally in the range £22,277 to £23,933. With potential progression once in post to £27,705 a year.
