Research Fellow - Solid-State-Lasers for Manufacturing

University of Southampton - ORC - Research

We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher to work on a development project for cryogenically-cooled high-power solid-state lasers and their use for manufacturing applications. The project, funded by the EPSRC, has the goal to build novel laser manufacturing instruments that will enable new research directions in Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) and manufacturing processes. The successful applicant will join the Optoelectronics Research Centre in a team bridging research groups investigating advanced solid-state laser systems and PLD.

You must have a strong background in laser physics, non-linear frequency conversion and optics, with postgraduate experience in solid-state-lasers and excellent experimental skills. You will be expected to work as part of a cohesive team, to interact with internal and external project partners, and to disseminate findings to the broader community. It is expected that you will hold a PhD* in Physics or Engineering or have equivalent qualifications. It would be desirable for you to have experience with modelling and engineering design software, along with a keen interest in developing new concepts, and being comfortable with the whole research process from ideation to implementation.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
