Overview Of Role

We are seeking an “Interim” Director of Operations to provide strategic leadership for all business support functions for the institute’s scientific activities. Reporting to the Director & Chief Executive, the Interim Director of Operations is responsible for the strategic planning, development, design, operation, and improvement of the resources and services that ensure exceptional support, long term growth and sustainability for the science of Rothamsted Research. The Interim Director of Operations will be an experienced leader with a deep understanding of external and internal factors impacting the functioning of the institute, with particular emphasis on the overall strategic management of financial, human and infrastructure resources.

As a member of the senior management team you will help advance our science by:

  • Leading business planning and institute-wide enterprise resources management in support of the science strategy
  • Playing an active and analytical role in the development of strategic financing scenarios and associated business decisions.
  • Overseeing the management of all operational departments using effective business acumen, leadership and management skills.
  • Liaising with all areas within the institution to stay up-to-date with all processes, procedures, strategies and advancements to ensure adequate support of the institution in both the short and long-term.
  • Leading specific initiatives, including human and infrastructure development strategies to support the long-term requirements of the institution.
  • Driving improvements in performance of technical and administrative support functions based on Key Performance Indicators.

The ideal applicant will have a degree in an area of public and/or business administration and significant leadership experience in managing operations in an innovation-oriented organisation. Strong financial planning and people management skills are also essential for this position.

The post is available for an initial period of up to 12 months and the starting salary will be flexible depending on the skills and experiences of the successful candidate.

The closing date for this position is Friday 19 January 2018 and interviews will be held shortly afterwards.
