OET provides a custom baculovirus expression service for its customers and undertakes R&D projects to develop novel products including vaccines and gene therapy vectors.  It also provides customers with kits to use in their own laboratories.

Applicants are invited to apply for a Scientific Officer (SO) position in OET’s Contract Services department to help maintain the high quality services and contract work that uses our own patented baculovirus expression system, flashBACTM as well as mammalian and bacterial expression projects.

OET contains a team of experts that have over 30 years of experience with recombinant protein production in insect cells, having also helped to develop new and improved baculovirus expression systems.  OET was established in 2007 and over the last decade has had the privilege of collaborating with major global clients including big pharma, biotech companies, government departments and academic research institutions.

The Role:

Responsibilities will involve working alongside OET's contract service manager and team to provide a high quality service to OET's clients using the baculovirus expression system as well as projects involving gene expression in mammalian and bacterial cells.  The SO will be involved in an interesting range of projects that includes gene design, plasmid construction, DNA extraction, PCR, QPCR, insect and mammalian cell culture, recombinant virus production, protein analysis & purification (ACTA system).  Over time it is expected that the SO will take increasing responsibility to lead their own projects working closely with clients to build positive, long-lasting relationships.  The SO will be expected to be able to work to deadlines, maintain accurate lab records and produce high quality reports.

It is likely that the SO will also have the opportunity to be engaged in OET’s in-house R&D programme.

The Ideal Candidate:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed person with good time management skills, reliability under pressure and with good decision-making and problem-solving skills.

The ideal candidate will be educated to PhD level in a relevant biological field.  We will also consider applicants educated to Master’s level with appropriate experience.  The successful candidate will possess good molecular biology skills, aseptic technique and have previous experience of working with a recombinant expression system or related area. Experience in a commercial lab, knowledge of plasmid design/construction, cell culture and protein purification is desirable but not essential.

The successful candidate will possess ability to work with minimal supervision after initial training, work effectively in a team environment with good communication skills, both oral and written, and have excellent time management, record keeping and commitment to meet deadlines.  High levels of accuracy and attention to detail along with good IT skills are essential. 

Additional Information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £24,000 to £29,000 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This post is for a contract of 2 years initially with a starting date preferred in March/April 2018 or earlier.
