PhD Studentship: Asian Artscapes: New Ecologies of Contemporary Global Art and its ‘Effects’

University of Southampton - Winchester School of Art

Building on the work of the supervisor’s book India’s Biennale Effect: A Politics of Contemporary Art (2017), which presents interdisciplinary work (combining critical theory, anthropology, art and social history, and art and design practices), applications are welcomed for research offering critical explorations of global, contemporary art in terms of its effects and resonances through Asia’s diverse city spaces, communities, local/global economies and emerging public spheres. It is envisaged projects will offer situated readings and documentation of contemporary phenomena such as art biennales, events, collectives and other contingent art practices and movements in the context of Asia. In examining contemporary art as critical sites of both production and reception, the proposed research will ideally chime with the supervisors’ developing book series Asian Artscapes (Routledge, India), which contributes to a wider understanding of contemporary culture, leading us deeper into its creative ecosystems, networks and tensions.
