Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is one of the UK’s foremost research-intensive higher education institutions, ranked ninth amongst multi-faculty universities in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. In 2012, QMUL invested in a European Unit within its Joint Research Management Office (JRMO) to build on its existing EU grant portfolio.

This presents an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and highly experienced pre award officer to assist to the achievement of our strategic research aims. The Unit is a busy team responsible for providing a comprehensive pre and post support service across QMUL’s three faculties.

To succeed in the role, you will be expected to:

  • Have a detailed understanding of the research environment and professional track record in European funding pre award, particularly EU RTD Framework programmes.
  • Identify relevant EU opportunities and drive the bidding process, including bid-writing/bid review and internal and external submission processing.
  • Advise on financial issues and prepare budgets to comply with QMUL and funder requirements.
  • Develop a good working relationships with EU funders and collaborative partners.
  • Understand the issues related to the contract process, lead negotiation and draft contracts.

The successful applicant will ensure all research active staff receive up-to-date and relevant guidance and support regarding funder priorities, funding requirements, funder submission processes, and coordinate the internal approval process. You will also assist in building QMUL expertise in relation to the access and uptake of EU funding opportunities to increase the quality and competitiveness of submissions and awards.

We will require someone with a high degree of competency in numeracy, written and project management skills in order to build on the development of the service and to support any future changes. You will be an excellent communicator with proven organisational skills and the ability to work to tight deadlines is also required.

The post is a full time, permanent appointment. Starting salary will be £45,577 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
