Commercial Engagement Director

Hours of work: 35 hours per week

Contract: This is a term position until 31/01/2019

Location: This position will be based at the Bay Campus

Background information

The CED (SPECIFIC) at the Innovation and Knowledge Centre will be responsible for management of a team of grade 9 (Project Management, Business Development and Technology Transfer) staff, leadership and coordination of industrial engagement with multiple business partners and joint leadership of the strategic direction of the centre with the Industrial Director and the Academic Director.

In order to carry out the above tasks, the post holder will be expected to have experience of operating large public private sector partnership projects. A first degree in engineering or business related area, ideally a post graduate qualification in a business / marketing / or energy related area. An appropriate qualification in Operational Management or Project Management would also be desirable but not essential. The post holder should have experience in working with academic and other staff in both an academic institution and in industry to ensure delivery of the project outcomes and results by working with and through others. Experience of confidently leading, managing and chairing meetings and making presentations on complex subjects at a senior level will be expected. The post holder will be required to represent the University and the project at a local, national and international level and liaising with researchers, industrialists and government agencies in order to promote SPECIFIC and the Science and Innovation Campus. Ultimately this will contribute to enhancing the University’s position as a leading provider of relevant industrially focussed research which in turn will lead to wealth creation and social development in the region.

Essential Criteria:

  • Educated to degree level, preferably in either management, business or engineering or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in a business development role within a large, multi-faceted organisation
  • Experience of developing and implementing business strategies and commercialisation activities for disruptive technologies
