PhD Studentship: Health Governance in Africa

University of Southampton - Department of Accounting and the Centre for Research in Accounting, Accountability and Governance

Southampton Business School has studentships available for postgraduate research students admitted full-time onto its PhD programme and commencing their studies in October 2018.

In 2015, the United Nations (UN) adopted 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) to transform the world by 2030. Goal number 3 is to ‘ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages’. Among others, the goal aims to ensure the reduction of global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births, end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age, end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases by 2030.  Given that governance is a key determinant of economic growth, social advancement and overall development, the objective of this project will be to document the organization and effectiveness of health governance in Africa in ensuring better health and financial outcomes. The outcomes of the project will assist the UN and African governments in health governance policy formulation to ensure the objectives of SDG goal 3 are achieved.
