PhD Studentship: Data Protection Impact Assessment and Data Protection by Design

University of Southampton - Institute for Law and the Web (Ilaws)

The General Data Protection is applicable in 6 months and businesses are still grappling with the implications of this regulatory change. New privacy-enhancing technological products are emerging on the market such as Big Privacy or Privatar. These products offer solutions for pseudonymisation, anonymisation and the building of data governance structures in order to ease auditing. What is still missing however is a mature and comprehensive methodology to conduct data protection impact assessments in order to support decision-making in the field of data protection and enable smaller players in particular such as SMEs and startups to navigate the data protection landscape and make informed choice right from the design stage.

Applications are welcome to draw on a wide methodological range to approach the research and by taking comparative case studies. The applicant would work in the context of the Institute for Law and the Web (Ilaws) which has been set up in Southampton Law School as an interdisciplinary research centre working closely with members of the Data Science Institute and the Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence.
