CLOSER Technical Manager

University College London - UCL Institute of Education - Department of Social Science

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the role of Technical Manager at UCL’s Department of Social Science with responsibility for CLOSER Discovery; a search engine which enables researchers to search the content of eight longitudinal studies.

This extended multi-phase project focuses on metadata creation and enhancement co-ordinated across multiple institutions. It utilises DDI-3.2 as its metadata standard and will require working with external software developers.  You will work closely with the UK Data Service alongside the technical oversight committee. You will maintain links with the other institutions involved in CLOSER as well as liaising with colleagues across UCL. You will be expected to work independently but also work closely with the Director to meet the goals of the overall project.

The CLOSER Technical Manager will be expected to take the lead in designing and developing software for the CLOSER project to enable the documentation of complex metadata extracted from longitudinal studies.

You will support users of CLOSER’s software, training and advising them in its use and in the definition of guidelines and conventions. The role will be responsible for upgrading the functionality of the software if it is judged to be necessary. This will involve liaison with the CLOSER partner institutions.

The appointment is available immediately until 30th September 2019, in the first instance.

The post holder will have an MSc in a computationally based field or equivalent professional experience and significant experience of software development using C# as well as experience of modern software and database design patterns.

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 8. The salary range will be £43,023 - £50,753 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
