Research Associate / Scientist (System Toxicology)

Simcyp Limited

Line of Management: Head of Systems Modelling
Position Type: Full Time (1 year fixed term contract with a possibility to extend to 3 years)
Holiday Entitlement: 25 days, plus statutory bank holidays
Location: Sheffield or Canterbury, UK

Job Overview:

We have an immediate opening for a Research Associate / Scientist with good working understanding of computational systems biology. Candidates should have in-depth experience of literature data gathering and simulation of molecular interaction networks. Ideally this should be in mammalian cell biology, toxicology or pharmacokinetics-pharmacodynamics. Experience with constrained based modelling of genome scale metabolic networks and/or analysis of ~omics data will be an advantage.

The post will involve research and development of large scale molecular interaction network models describing effects of chemicals. Computational methods will involve ODE simulation, constrained based modelling of genome scale metabolic networks, quasi-steady state simulations and integration of ~omics data with mechanistic models. Network models will be integrated with Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic (PBPK) simulations. The ultimate goal is better understanding and prediction of adverse effects to improve safety of medicines. This is achieved through multi-disciplinary approach integrating legacy data, state of the art measurement, multi-scale mathematical modelling, simulation and data analysis.

The post does not include laboratory or clinical work. We offer a unique and exciting mix of academic and commercial environments which encourage regular attendance at scientific meetings as part of continuous education programs. All scientists are expected to participate in writing scientific reports relevant to their work under the guidance of our world-leading senior scientists.

  • PhD in computational or systems biology, mathematics, physics, engineering or related fields.
  • Good working knowledge and understanding of modelling and simulation principles of computational systems biology.
  • In-depth experience in molecular biology literature data gathering and analysis.
  • Demonstrable communication skills, as evident by presentation at scientific meetings, and good interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Experience in the toxicology/toxicokinetics fields
  • Experience in modelling of genome scale metabolic networks
  • Analysis of transcriptome or other ~omics data
  • Programming skills in Matlab, R, Python or other programming languages
  • Scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals

Company Overview:

Simcyp is part of Certara, a company which combines sophisticated research and development informatics with the power of predictive science methodologies to span the drug development spectrum and offer pharma a previously unavailable ‘end-to-end’ solution in the quest for improving human health. The Simcyp team conducts cutting-edge research and provides consultancy, knowledge integration tools, algorithms, modelling solutions and databases (implemented in its globally-recognised

Simcyp Population-based Simulator) for a client base of major blue-chip pharmaceutical and biotechnology organisations. Simcyp focuses, in particular, on gathering information required for the modelling and simulation (M&S) of the individual time-course and fate of drugs. We are on course to become the global industry standard, consequently, there is a continuous requirement for high quality people to join us, help in our expansion and share in our success.
