The Warburg Institute is known throughout the world for its expertise in the study of cultural history and the role of images in culture.  The Warburg Institute Library is ranked amongst the twenty libraries of all time which have changed the world; its Photographic Collection houses an unprecedented collection of photographs organized by subject matter.

About the role

The Institute has been awarded a grant from the Kress Foundation to provide funds for a fixed-term (nine month) post to digitise the section of the Warburg Institute Photographic Collection devoted to classical mythology in medieval art. The digital images will be created by the Institute's Photographer.  The Academic Assistant/Photographic Collection Assistant will be required to undertake research to add the metadata to be incorporated in the Institute's Iconographic Database.  This post is responsible to the curators of the Photographic Collection, Dr Paul Taylor and Dr Rembrandt Duits.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Art History or a relevant discipline, or equivalent relevant experience, coupled with sound knowledge of the iconography of European art and proven experience of undertaking academic research.  Technically adept, the candidate will demonstrate high level IT skills and the ability to effectively plan a programme and schedule of work which enables him or her to complete a range of complex tasks to set deadlines.  A highly effective communicator, the successful candidate will also demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with academic, professional and administrative staff.

This post is fixed for 9 months.
