Research Scientist (KTP Associate)

Northumbria University - Engineering and Environment

Key facts:

  • QuantuMDx and Northumbria University have been awarded a KTP to collaborate on development of an innovative medical diagnostic product utilising scalable smart material coatings for large scale production of microfluidic medical devices.
  • QuantuMDx Group Ltd is a multinational life sciences tools and diagnostics developer headquartered in the United Kingdom, with subsidiary operations in the United States and Singapore. The company’s product range innovates each aspect of the DNA testing process, from extraction to amplification to detection.
  • The KTP is led by researchers in Northumbria’s Smart Materials and Surfaces Laboratory whose interests are mainly around how liquids interact with surfaces and how that interaction can be controlled.
  • This post is subject to funding: candidates must be able to start no later than 12th April 2018.

You should have a post-graduate qualification in:

  • Experimental Physics, Engineering, Surface Chemistry, Materials Science or a related discipline.

You will be expected to demonstrate experience of:

  • Planning, developing and conducting experiments
  • Characterization of surfaces using SEM, optical and contact profilometry
  • Numerical simulations of liquid flow via commercially available software.
  • Writing of high quality reports and papers for publication and dissemination

You will need to possess, or have the capacity to develop, skills in the following areas:

  • Working at the boundaries of two or more scientific or engineering disciplines
  • The surface modification of thermoplastic substrates and the physical and chemical characterisation of these modified materials
  • An interest in and/or understanding of microfluidic devices for use in point-of-care medical diagnostics
  • A passion for problem solving, adaptability and development of experimental designs to accommodate evolving requirements
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of commercially sensitive aspects of the technology

You will need to demonstrate personal attributes commensurate with the challenges of this KTP project, including:

  • an interest in working with a technology-based SME
  • a highly analytical approach
  • a determination to help build the business and drive QuantuMDx's products to market
  • an understanding of commercial considerations
  • self-motivation and ability to take a technical lead

Additional information:

The role is based with QuantuMDx in Newcastle upon Tyne and will require attendance at the University from time to time and travel in connection with the KTP for training, project work, conferences and meetings (UK and possibly international).

Start date: April 12th 2018 or earlier
