PD Research Scientist

Moredun Research Institute

Fixed Term Project until  March 2020

‘A test for detection of equine small strongyles; supporting sustainable worm control in practice’.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and conscientious individual to join our team working Equine Parasitology at Moredun Research Institute, based in south Edinburgh.

The Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Equine Parasitology will undertake studies on development of a diagnostic test for small strongyle infection horses. The project is funded by the Horse Trust, working with Prof. Jacqui Matthews’ Moredun team and in collaboration with Prof. Martin Nielsen (University of Kentucky) and Dr Corrine Austin (Austin-Davis Biologics, UK).  The partners will work together in further developing this much-needed test to improve equine welfare.

We are looking for a hard-working, enthusiastic individual with a keen interest in or knowledge of equine health, with laboratory skills in molecular biology, immunochemistry, online survey development and statistical analysis. You will work within a large research group, well-known for its multidisciplinary and innovative approach to combatting helminth-associated disease in animals.

You  will play an important role in the further development of the test and its transition to a commercial laboratory. This study involves the recruitment, through survey, of equine yards for parasitology studies to support test development. A further activity is optimisation of production of the recombinant proteins that are the basis of the test and liaison with our scientific and commercial partners in the final validation of the test using the ELISA. The appointee will also contribute to studies to develop the current serum-based test to a saliva format.
