Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position to join our dynamic research environment at the University of Warwick, UK. The laboratory of Professor Alfonso Jaramillo is developing novel experimental methodologies to engineer and evolve synthetic phages.

As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow we need your expertise to help build the lab’s research capability. You will join an interdisciplinary team and work at the interface of molecular biology, combinatorial optimisation, microfluidics, directed evolution and 3D printing enhancing the ability to combat diseases of the future. You will set experimental timelines, design and conduct experiments, develop and validate relevant assays, analyse data, present results, write final protocols and scientific manuscripts. You will also be required to keep detailed records and store the data in accordance to the University guidelines.

You will have a Ph.D. in biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology or other biomedical science discipline, with strong experience in synthetic biology, genetics and molecular biology protocols. In addition, you will have experience in laboratory techniques including advanced molecular cloning (Gibson required), bacterial expression and assay development/validation. Excellent problem-solving, analytical, protocol development, troubleshooting skills together with good understanding of genetics are mandatory. Proficiency with bioinformatics tools for structural biology is also essential for this position. Experience with virology, microbiology and at least two first-author publications in high quality internationally recognized journals are desired. Experience with recombinant phage/virus engineering or in vivo directed evolution in bioreactors would also be desirable.

You will also have excellent written and verbal communication in English with the ability to work independently and as a part of the team.

It is intended that the successful applicant will, through their work in the post, gain considerable new technical and analytical experience in a key area together with writing prospective of high quality publications in support of the research activity.

They will also gain transferable skills in science communication, research planning and administration.
