The Research Program in New Earth Histories is led by Professor Alison Bashford, within the School of Humanities and Languages, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The School of Humanities and Languages includes exceptional scholars in history, environmental humanities, and area studies. New Earth Histories is an initiative supported by the UNSW SHARP strategic research hire processes.

About the role (2 Positions)

  • $91K - $98K per annum plus 17% superannuation and leave loading.
  • Fixed-term for a period of 3 years.
  • Full-time.

Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral Research Fellows to join the Research Program in New Earth Histories, led by Professor Alison Bashford. Each fellowship is for 3 years. New Earth Histories brings the history of geosciences and the history of select world cosmologies together, with the aim of creating a cosmopolitan history of environmental sciences in the modern period, c. 1780-1950. Applications are invited from historians, historical anthropologists, or historical geographers who have a background and ongoing research plans in the modern history of geology, palaeontology, and environmental sciences in a global context, and an interest in exploring comparative cosmologies. Preference may be given to applicants with research training and ongoing projects in Pacific and/or Indigenous contexts.

Postdoctoral Research Fellows will initiate individual historical research projects and work with the New Earth Histories team in select collaborative and comparative projects.

Successful candidates will work directly with Professor Alison Bashford at UNSW, and a developing, multidisciplinary team of international collaborators.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • a proposal for a postdoctoral research project fitting New Earth Histories aims and objectives;
  • demonstrated capacity for high-level engagement in history of geology and environmental sciences;
  • demonstrated capacity to complete and publish scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals;
  • experience in, or capacity to contribute to, the preparation and submission of competitive research grants;
  • a PhD (or near completion) in history, historical anthropology, historical geography, or cognate disciplines.
