Heriot-Watt University - School of Engineering and Physical Sciences

The Research Administrator post is a key role within the School, working closely with the School’s Director of Research to support and develop School research activity. The post holder works with academic and administrative staff across the School, with the University’s Research and Enterprise Services team (RES), and with research administrators in other Schools. In addition, there is significant interaction with external funding bodies, such as the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council. You will:

  • Produce and develop management information, (benchmarking, performance data, analysis of awards etc.), to support School Research planning. This includes the collection and collation of data from a wide variety of internal and external sources.
  • Provide administrative support and raise awareness to ensure that the school meets the requirements of funding bodies with regards to Open Access publications and Open Data.
  • Provide administrative support for the School’s REF (Research Excellence Framework) submissions, to include: interpreting REF submission requirements; co-authoring, with academic staff, impact statements for REF submission; providing advice and support on data management in the PURE web-based research information system; maintaining data required for REF submissions; and providing reports as required.
  • Liaise with external partners, such as Funding Councils and other Universities, and when required represent the Director of Research or Director of Administration at relevant meetings (either internal to the University or externally facing).
  • Provide administrative support to major strategic research initiatives, such as the Edinburgh Research Partnership in Engineering and Mathematics, the Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Laser-based Production Processes, and strategic alliances with industry.
  • Raise awareness of relevant Research calls to academic staff, including the identification of particular opportunities for individual academics.
  • Represent the school on relevant university working groups etc., for example the REF Data Group, Athena SWAN self-assessment team and liaise with staff within the School for either collating feedback or disseminating information.
  • Develop and implement improvements to the working practices, services provided, and the administrative systems relevant to the School’s research activity.

Candidates should be educated to degree level or have significant experience in research administration, be pro-active and have well-developed skills in collating & synthesising information, in addition to excellent oral and written communication skills.
