Applications for the post of Engineering Project Manager are invited by the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes (ING) to manage development projects.

The ING seeks an experienced project manager to join ING’s engineering group and manage some of the telescope and instrumentation projects, some of which are on-going and others which are being planned. The successful candidate will come from an engineering or science background and will be responsible ensuring that development activities are delivered in a controlled fashion, focussing on the desired objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing various types of projects by applying appropriate knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to plan, execute, and close projects.

The post holder will write technical papers and reports, and make presentations at project review meetings as well as at international conferences.

Qualifications

Preferred candidates will be educated to degree level or equivalent.

Essential Knowledge and Experience

The successful candidate must:

  • Possess knowledge of theoretical and practical aspects of project management.
  • Possess proven experience in people management.
  • Possess an ability to write clear and well-structured documentation.
  • Possess an ability to provide authoritative advice, in project management related issues, to others as part of a project or operational team.

Desirable Knowledge and Experience

For this appointment, the following will also be taken into consideration:

  • Possession of a project management qualification.
  • Ability to influence, negotiate, and lead others both within the ING and with its external stakeholders.
  • Experience in the management of development projects in an operational environment.
  • Ability to take on the management of projects in mid-stream.
  • Possession of an appreciation of health and safety issues related to operational environments.

Other requirements

Applicants must also be able to:

  • work occasionally at the ORM;
  • travel and work away from base and overseas.

CONTRACTUAL INFORMATION

Following a six-month probationary period, this will be a permanent position. The appointment will be at grade E with a starting gross salary of €41,884 per annum which is subject to Spanish income tax and social security deductions. After the first year, the salary will increase to €44,091 per annum.

Medical cover will be available to the appointee, partner, and accompanying children under the Spanish National Health Service. ING will assist those coming from abroad in registering with the Social Security and Health Service. A relocation package and financial support for Spanish lessons are available.

Applicants from outside the EU need to be in possession of a residence permit and work permit both of which must be valid for Spain.
